The first NSD program was written by Dr. Walter Jentzen using MathCAD, and this program was the standard in our group for years. He also wrote another version of the program in C++. The C++ version was not used quite so often because of the poor GUI interface, but its kernel was perfect. It became the prototype of the current Java GUI version.
Since more and more researchers are using the NSD method to analyze their porphyrin structures, we were getting requests for the NSD program and data from all over the world. Based on this situation, Professor John A Shelnutt determined to put the program online so that people could use it anywhere anytime.
Graduate student Lisong Sun begin work on the NSD Engine Project in the spring of 2001. The current stable version 3.0 was finished in June 2005 (Latest update to documentation: 06-03-2005).
Special thanks to Yan Qiu, Yi Lu, and Raid Haddad for their support.
